What is “Contact Management?”

News

by John Hammill
Apple has provided a reasonably comprehensive contact management system in OS X (now extended to include iPhones and iPads as well).
The programs on our Macs that do the bulk of the work are Address Book, which stores the information about each contact; iCal, which allows us to schedule events and include our contacts; and Mail, which in addition to handling our e-mail, also makes it easy to use the contact information in our mail pieces to keep our Address Book current and comprehensive.
Many other programs then take advantage of this contact information, including iPhoto and the three iWork productivity programs (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote). A number of other programs from both Apple and other vendors can make use of Address Bookʼs contact data base; considering how many thousands of programs exist, I offer no attempt to list them. Well, Iʼll just mention two of my favorite third-party applications, Print Shop and File Maker, which can use Address Bookʼs data in a variety of ways.
Understanding the built-in contact manager can make a truly wide array of common tasks a snap! A savvy Mac user can, for instance, pull an already-set up fax cover letter out of Pages, ready for use. Want a mailing list sorted by Zip Code? Youʼre covered. Print an envelope with destination and return addresses? Itʼs there. Include your familyʼs birthdays on your calendar? Just ask for it. Prepare a photo roster for your club? Assuming you have to photos, it only takes a minute.
And now your contacts, events, and to-do items can be automatically shared with and updated from your mobile Apple devices. Just set the rascals to do it and you donʼt have to think about it again.
SMUG will offer an overview and demonstration on Tuesday evening, Jan. 10 at our next regularly scheduled meeting. And then we will offer a series of how-to classes on Saturdays during January and February. Iʼm looking forward to seeing you all there; I think this qualifies as nifty fun with your Mac.
